The Africa Travel Association (ATA) is an international travel-industry association, promoting tourism to the African continent and infra-Africa travel partnership. It is a non-profit association, established in 1975 and has its headquarters in New York City, USA. This Association has significant ties with Tanzania tourism industry: In May 1998, the association held its 23rd Congress in Arusha and in December, 2003, Zanzibar hosted the ATA 7th Ecotourism Symposium. From 2001 through 2005, Tanzania was the President of the ATA Board of Directors.

At the 32nd Annual Congress held in May 2007 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Tanzania was chosen to host the 33rd ATA's Annual Congress. This 33rd Congress will be held in Arusha, from 19th to 23rd of May 2008. About 500 delegates are expected to attend the forthcoming Congress, including tour operators, dignitaries, Ministers and Executives from Africa, Europe and North America. His Excellency Jakaya-Mrisho Kikwete, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, will officially open the Congress, which will be held at the Arusha International Conference Centre.

The Congress will provide a forum for African tourism stakeholders to meet and deliberate on issues concerning tourism development, establish and strengthen existing contacts, plans and programmes that will boost tourism within member states and raise public awareness around the world on Africa's rich and diverse tourism opportunities and products.

Tanzania, as the host country, will benefit from the high visibility of the Congress, new visitors, trade in tourism products and services, foreign income generation and access to experts in public and private sectors in the tourism industry. The industry operators, mostly from the United States, will have another opportunity to link up with their Tanzanian counterparts. Tanzania will also showcase its various handicrafts and travel products, whereby an exhibition will be held at the Congress venue. The Congress delegates will be provided with the opportunity to experience the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most spectacular game sanctuaries in Tanzania and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A team of ATA inspectors comprised of Tanzania tourism Experts, 33rd ATA's Preparatory Committee Members, and ATA Executives from the Headquarters in New York - USA will conclude the ATA site inspection in Arusha on 15th January, 2008. On Wednesday 16th January 2008 a press conference will be held at the Movenpick Hotel - Dar es Salaam from 11h00, where the ATA Executive Director will give a statement to announce officially the 33rd Africa Travel Association's Annual Congress scheduled to take place in Arusha City at Arusha International Conference Centre from 19th to 23rd May 2008.
The Government calls upon operators of tourism and related businesses to prepare for this important Congress. We welcome potential exhibitors of tourism and related goods and services to contact the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism for more details.
