For the first time ever, Tanzania, the land of Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and the Serengeti, showcased its expanding luxury tourism product at the Luxury Travel Expo in Las Vegas. The Hon. Shamsa Mwangunga, ,minister of natural resources and tourism, lead a 24-person strong delegation of public and private sector tourism officials to the Expo, which is part of a promotional tour includes visits to Seattle and Los Angeles.

“The American market is our #1 source of tourism," said Minister Mwangunga. "In the 10 years since we have launched our campaign in the U.S., Tanzania has more than doubled the number of American arrivals.”

The 2008 worldwide tourism arrivals were 770, 376, a 7 percent increase over 2007, with visitors from the U.S. increasing from 58,341 to a record high of 66,953 to mainland Tanzania and the Spice Islands of Zanzibar.

“We hope that our strong presence at the Luxury Travel Expo will generate more upscale visitors as well as celebrity guests,” added Mwangunga.

The growth in luxury accommodations includes prestigious brands such as the Kempinski which recently opened Bilila Lodge Kempinski in the Serengeti National Park (and also has properties in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar); the Singita Grumeti Reserves, also in the Serengeti; Serena Hotels & Resorts with over seven properties in Tanzania, including its newest addition, Selous Mivumo and Malala lodges; The Fairmont in Zanzibar; Conservation Corps Africa; and Beyond. One & Only Resorts is also being planned for Zanzibar.

World Travel Market 2009
Tanzania as a regular participant, again this year featured in the World Travel Market (WTM) which is the biggest global event for travel industry to meet, network, negotiate and conduct business under one roof. The fair that took place from November 9 -12, 2009 in Excel, London, attracted over 50,000 exhibitors and visitors from all over the world compared to 49,963 visitors of last year.

Team Tanzania comprised of 59 private companies and 5 Government institutions represented a country in this year event. The private companies comprised of Tour operator (32), Hotels and Lodges (24), Resorts and Airline (3).

Team Tanzania was led by Hon Shamsa S Mwangunga (MP) Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism while Zanzibar delegation was led by Hon Samia H Suluhu, Minister for Tourism, Trade and investments.

As it was in the last year, Tanzania booth was located in Africa zone area (AF1600) facing Zimbabwe’s, Uganda’s and Rwanda’s. The Tanzania stand occupied a total of 278sq.m making one of the biggest booth in Africa zone Area. The booth was superb stand as it was branded with various attractions available in Tanzania projecting the true colours of Tanzania under TTB Logo: TANZANIA THE LAND OF KILIMANJARO, ZANZIBAR AND THE SERENGETI’’.

Team Tanzania managed to bring various information, promotion materials and souvenirs which were given to the various visitors who visited our pavilion.

This year’s World Travel Market Event brought together all business areas of the travel Industry under one roof. The event provided a unique environment for Tanzania exhibitors to address their business challenges to the clients on the following expectation:

-Sell and renew business contracts
-Make new contracts with international travel buyers to generate new sales leads.
-Meet face to face with current business clients.
-Explore and enter new markets and sectors.
-Introduce new products
-Educate the visitors about our products and services
-Recruit new agents and distributors
-Build brand awareness

The event was very successful in promoting Tanzania attractions to the World. All those who visited Tanzania booth were very satisfied with explanations given by exhibitors about destination Tanzania. Private sector companies from Tanzania were so impressed with the Stand construction, branding and layouts, and most of them admitted to have done a good business.

The overall management of the Tanzania stand was under Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB)
